JORDANIAN DOCUMENTARY RECOGNIZED AT ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL

(JORDAN - 09/19/2006) The jury of the Magma International Short Film Festival '06 in Italy has delivered its verdict and awarded the Jordanian short documentary "Growing Up in Amman's Suburbia" the title of Special Mention for Best
Documentary, which is the highest honor for documentaries in the
festival.
Hazim Bitar, filmmaker and founder of the Amman Filmmakers Cooperative, said "we are proud to receive this recognition in our quest to tell stories of marginalized Jordanian communities."
Bitar's short documentary breaks from form to tell a story of how children in Jordan's sprawling suburbs coup with the facts of life.
Previously, the documentary was also part of the official competition for the Huesca International Short Film Festival in Spain, an Academy-certified film festival.
Bitar's film was shot while filming human interest stories for the Jordan River Foundation, an organization established to empower impoverished Jordanian communities with special emphasis on women and children.
